An Update On Hair Loss

It’s been a couple of decades since we first started seeing clients, and during this time some of them have started to experience the so-called “normal” thinning of the hair associated with the aging process and have asked me what, if anything, can be done about it. So I was obliged to investigate.

What I found is that hair loss due to aging is related to hormonal changes that occur as one grows older. Now, we don’t know if these changes can be prevented, but some of them can be dealt with by making modifications to your hair care system.

The hormonal culprit is a form of testosterone known as DHT, which collects on the scalp and causes hair loss. It can occur in both men and women. The remedy is simply to keep it from collecting on the scalp by shampooing the hair more frequently. However, this is easier said than done, since most shampoos build up over time on the hair and scalp and simply do not rinse away completely.

A notable exception is the Nioxin system, which consists of a cleanser, a scalp conditioner, and a leave-in treatment.
